\n\tAs of yesterday, I was convinced lice jump. I even stated so as fact to friends. I apologize for spreading false lice jumping lies. Lice do not actually jump. They do quickly travel, however, from hair to hair, hair to hat, hair to backpack, hair to sweater, hair to scarf, hair to shoulder, etc. You get the idea. You must be in close contact with someone that has lice to get lice, OR be in close contact with THINGS from someone who has lice.<\/div>\n
\n\t <\/div>\n
\n\tIf you want to know what to look for, here is a bad case of lice. Simply Google for additional pictures, but I thought this particular picture was good because you could get a good idea of their size and color.<\/div>\n
\n\t <\/div>\n
\n\tAs someone who is vigilant, or as my husband says, neurotic, here are some things you can do to protect your child.<\/div>\n
\n\t <\/div>\n
\n\t1.) Instruct your child not to share any hats or hair brushes, or anything else that goes on the head for that matter. Quiz them. Pretend that you are your child’s friend, and then try to put headphones on them. Your non-stop berrating may or may not sink in, but in my book an ounce of prevention…<\/div>\n
\n\t <\/div>\n
\n\t2.) Tea tree oil is unproven to keep lice away. However, I found enough evidenice (ok, internet hearsay), to show that this pungent oil, when mixed in shampoo, may be a deterrent. Lice don’t like pungent. I don’t exactly like pungent either! However, in this case, I’d rather be stinky than itchy.<\/div>\n
\n\t <\/div>\n
\n\t3.) Braid hair. I lightly mist my daughter’s hair in the morning with tea tree infused spray on hair conditioner, and then make two braids. Professional Nit Pickers (yep..it’s actually a profession), say that braiding long hair IS effective, as it gives the lice less surface area to jump and scurry to.<\/div>\n
\n\t <\/div>\n
\n\t4.) Nit Pick – Have your child sit down afterschool, and go through his or her hair. Look around the ear area, nape of neck, crown. Look for little litty bitty scurrying critters of doom. It’s better to catch them EARLIER versus later. After lice lay nits, or eggs, your clean-up job will exponentially harder. <\/div>\n
\n\t <\/div>\n
\n\t5.) Communicate – Lice happen. They don’t care who you are. They just want a nice warm blood host to party with for awhile. So, if you hear of an outbreak, it is considered POLITE and SMART to tell others. You don’t have to mention names, but telling people that there is a problem is the first step in dealing with it. The sooner an outbreak is contained, the less time and energy will have to be used battling the little head critters.<\/div>\n
