I love fresh basil, but for some reason, the nutty herbal sauce has often fallen short for me. Determined to make a version that levels up, I think this pesto recipe does the job! By adding lemon and red pepper, my version adds a layer of excitement to the nutty blend that coats pasta du jour.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While not directly pesto,\u00a0the ancient Romans enjoyed a similar paste called &#8220;moretum,&#8221; made with herbs,\u00a0cheese,\u00a0olive oil,\u00a0and sometimes pine nuts.<\/p>\n<p>This is by no means an authentic Italian recipe. I have been told point blank that Northern Italians do not add garlic to their pesto sauce at all, so I know that adding lemon, extra garlic, and red pepper would be considered highly offensive. Shhh &#8211;\u00a0 We&#8217;ll just keep it our little secret and enjoy this flavorful combination.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll need a food processor to make this sauce, or a bullet-style blender works like a charm.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>You will need:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<ul class=\"fv_recipe_ingredient_width\">\n<li class=\"ingredient\"><span class=\"amount\"><span class=\"toggleunits\" data-alt=\"45 g\">\u2153 cup<\/span><\/span> pine nuts<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">4 <span class=\"name\">large garlic cloves, roughly chopped<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\"><span class=\"amount\"><span class=\"toggleunits\" data-alt=\"64 g\">2 cups<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"name\">packed fresh basil leaves<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\"><span class=\"amount\">\u00bd teaspoon<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"name\">salt<\/span><\/li>\n<li>One teaspoon red pepper flakes<\/li>\n<li>Juice from one lemon<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"amount\">\u00bc teaspoon<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"name\">ground black pepper<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"amount\"><span class=\"toggleunits\" data-alt=\"160 ml\">\u2154 cup<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"name\">extra virgin olive oil<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"amount\"><span class=\"toggleunits\" data-alt=\"50 g\">\u00bd cup<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"name\">grated Parmigiano-Reggiano<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-37944\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boredmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20240115_195037_0000.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" data-kale-share-title=\"Pesto That Packs A Punch\" data-kale-share-url=\"https:\/\/www.boredmom.com\/?p=37928\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stage.boredmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20240115_195037_0000.png 1024w, https:\/\/stage.boredmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20240115_195037_0000-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/stage.boredmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20240115_195037_0000-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/stage.boredmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20240115_195037_0000-500x250.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Add all of the ingredients to your blender and pulse the mixture until it is of a smooth consistency, but not obliterated. I like to see little bits of basil and nuts in my pesto sauce. I find that the lemon juice also helps maintain the bright green color.
